Today was another full day of learning.
Book Exchange and Reading
We had our second book exchange and students were able to take out three books. Reading at home is very important. In October, we’ll be starting a daily reading program, encouraging students to read for at least 30 minutes per day. You can help them get used to this by starting now. Ask them about what books they took out. Ask if you can borrow their books so you can chat about them. Even carve out time to read together. I know it can sometimes feel weird to read to 11 and 12 year olds, but my wife and I continue to read to our 12 year old and it’s such a lovely family time.
Blackout Poetry
Students worked on finishing up their Blackout Poetry from yesterday. Their poems are beautiful and profound. They’ll be bringing them home next week for you to see.
Math
Today in math, we worked on comparing and ordering decimals. There were three pages of practice. About half the students finished in class time. The rest are taking it home for homework. I’ve attached it below.
Social Studies
In Social Studies this afternoon, we explored the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, learning how can support our indigenous friends, family, and neighbours as we work to create a strong Canada that works for everyone. You should ask your child which Call to Action made the biggest impact on them. If you’d like to read through the Calls to Action yourself, I’ve included them below.
