Mr. Buhler's Class Planners Tuesday, October 21, 2025

Tuesday, October 21, 2025

I had meetings until recess today, so students worked independently on their Writer’s Workshop with a substitute in the room this morning. The TOC said they worked incredibly well. I was quite proud of them.

In Math, we continued learning about different kinds of repeating decimals, and how to find them without the use of a calculator. For the most part, students are picking up the material really well. A few of them are forgetting to do their after school work, so remind them to check the Class Website daily for some practice questions.

In Science, we used flashlights and basketballs to explain why earth has day and night. Tomorrow, we’ll be learning why day is shorter in the winter months and longer in the summer months.

Due for Wednesday

  1. Read for 30 minutes. Ask me for recommendations.
  2. Math Questions Below
  3. Micro-story (second draft) due tomorrow
  4. Explain to one adult in the family why we have day and night on earth.

Overdue

  1. Grad hoodie forms are now overdue. We’re hoping to place the order this week. If you need more time or to chat about cost, just email and let us know.

Math Questions

Convert the following fractions into decimals. This is review of all the concepts we’ve learning so far.

  1. 3/10
  2. 9/10
  3. 12/100
  4. 344/1000
  5. 8/9
  6. 21/99
  7. 1/3
  8. 6/11
  9. 1/11
  10. 5/3

Micro-Story Instructions

  1. Take out your rough draft of your forest micro-story from yesterday.
  2. Read it.
  3. Then, read it again a lot slower. Even whisper it to yourself to help you listen to it the way someone else would read it.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Does my story use all four (five) senses?

Does my story show and not tell?

Does my reader feel like they’re in the forest with the character?

Does my story show a character’s emotion?

Does the the setting (the forest) reveal how that emotion is affecting them?

Do I rely too much on verbs like: “he saw, he heard, he smelled, he felt…” instead of describing the world more vibrantly?

4. Rewrite your story again, focusing on all the way you struggled above.
